NELI is excited to share the results of our 2014-16 Case study, which aimed to understand the challenges facing School Governing Bodies (SGBs), as well as to test possible interventions designed to better capacitate them.

Under the South African Schools Act, School Governing Bodies are responsible for the governing of the school, mobilising support for the school to supplement the resources provided by the State, and for holding all actors accountable to their duties under law. Despite the enormous responsibility placed on SGBs, they are woefully under-supported. To ensure that schools are well-governed, inclusive, and are in positions to leverage stakeholder community investment, it is imperative to develop interventions that talk to and enhance the role of SGBs.
Who is NELI:
The Norkitt Education Leadership Initiative (NELI) works to improve School Governing Body (SGB) capacity. Specifically, we work with SGBs to build capacity to better run their school, attract community support, and have the confidence, skills and networks to hold actors accountable.
Properly supported SGBs can, we argue, provide an important mechanism to build democratic participation in public education, as well as reduce inequality. Having successfully demonstrated the effects of our intervention, we are now hoping to share our ideas and further develop the lessons learned with a wide range of education stakeholders.
